During the Late Byzantine period the area east of the Temple of Artemis including its main altar (its square foundation blocks can still be seen today) was used an an industrial area including kilns. Pottery production continued throughout the Umayyad Period until the 749 AD earthquake where some columns from the temple fell on top of the kilns destroying them.
