::The archeological site of Jerash is absolutely worth the visit when you are in Jordan. Not as famous as Petra, but close as beautiful! Bring a hat, water and sunlotion as the shade is sparse at the site. Start with the arch of Hadrian and walk to the hippodrome. Continue to the plaza and visit the theaters, nymphaeum and collonade. It is amazing. If you have the chance to visit in July, try to visit the Jerash festival! Highly recommended.

::This is the southern entry gate to the city of Jerash and the only one for modern visitors. Take a look at its southern facade. You'll notice that it's decorative and architectural features are very much alike the ones at the Arch of Hadrian. This is because this gate was built around the same time as the arch. They are both also perfectly aligned to allow the Philadelphia (Amman) - Gerasa road to pass under them both. Look now over to your left. The flanking tower wall shows secondary usage of masonry blocks. In particular, you can see a long door jamb (see image on this review). These blocks came from the Hippodrome after it was badly affected by an earthquake sometime before the South Gate's wall stretch was rebuilt around 390 AD. Cross the gate and immediately turn left towards the end corner where you will find an olive press by the lower levels of the city wall.

::This is not the end. Go further to the south .

::It is beautiful in its own way as it is much simpler. Also reminds me of the Palmyra in Syria. The architecture is very similar. Once you go through this gate you trully enter the city.
