Mukawir or Fortress of Machaerus is a small site of castle ruins in the Madaba Govenerate East of the Dead Sea and about 45 minutes South of Madaba. It is not an extraordinary site nor a Must see for short term visitors. However, if you do a visit around the Dead Sea, Ma’in Hot Springs or Madaba you might wanna pay it a visit and enjoy the views from the hill.

Machaerus (Μαχαιροῦς, from Ancient Greek: μάχαιρα "Makhaira" (a sword) is a fortified hilltop Palace located in Jordan (24 km) Southeast of the mouth of the Jordan River on the Eastern side of the Dead Sea. According to FLAVIUS JOSEPHUS, it is the location of the imprisonment and Execution of JOHN the BAPTIST. This infamous Execution took place in 32 AD shortly before the Passover, following an imprisonment of two years. The site also provides the setting for four additional New Testament characters: HEROD the Great & his son TETRACH HERODANTIPAS & his second wife & Princess HERODIAS & and her daughter, Princess SALOME. Wikipedia. Ruins on top of the hill, be prepared for an uphill walk to the site with magnificent view of the Dead Sea & Jerusalem Hieghts .

Not much of the structure left, you have to use your imagination. No shade. Awesome views over the dead sea. 5-10 minute walk from the car park. Lots of caves to explore below the plateau. Had the place to myself - a couple of others were heading over as I was leaving.

It's part of Christian pilgrimage places in Jordan, related to the decapitation of John the Baptist, not far from Dead sea nor Ma'en natural hot baths where Herodotus the great used to treat himself, the zone is extremely magnificent, many interesting trails and suitable accommodation in Madaba 35km from the fortress

Excellent place of historical and biblical relevance! Far away, but easy to get to. The walk up to the palace is nice. There could be more historical markers and explanation. Official time is 8-4, but we arrived at 10:30 and it was just opening.
