Djinn blocks receive their name due to a Bedouin folkloric belief that certain spirits (“djinn” or genie) inhabit these cubical monuments. The reality is more prosaic, and the blocks are known to have served as tombs or memorials to the dead. Here, you have three (numbers 7, 8 and 9) of the 25 blocks standing in Petra. Further down the path, there is another block visible in the distance above and to the right of the tunnel before the start of the steep descent into the Siq.
